Now that summer is coming to a close we're recapping our favorite hair trends of the season. Hair stylist Richard Collins, our resident celeb hairstylist insider, breaks down the top three hair trends that dominated the social scene this summer.
This season saw statement making hair colors with the technicolor trend. From bright blues, pastel pink strands, rainbow highlights, and dynamic purple ombres, Collins says this was THE trend of summer. We saw temporary crayon-colored highlights in the form of clip in extensions and pastel hair chalks. Achieved by rubbing soft pastel chalks onto hair ends, chalking was a fun way to try out the trend, but required a deep conditioning to replenish moisture stripped in the process. Collins recommended using Schwarzkopf essence ULTIME Diamond Color & Radiance Illuminating Mask after shampooing the chalk out. Ombre jeweled tones were a more permanent, low-maintenance color choice for those a little more daring, but to keep those locks looking healthy, hydration was a must. Collins suggested using Schwarzkopf essence ULTIME Diamond Color and Radiance Shampoo and Conditioner regularly to combat dry-looking color.
It’s a well-known fact that washing your hair too often is bad for it, especially in the dry summer months and Collins believes this led to the season’s next big trend; the knotted up-do. Whether fully twisted up on top, half up, or low slung, knots and messy undone buns were everywhere this summer. They were the chicest way of keeping those beach waves intact and out of the way when the weather got unbearably hot. Knotted low or high up on the crown of the head, Collins said strands were tied into a knot, with wispy pieces of hair pulled from the knot and hung loosely around the face. The look was finished with a light hairspray like Schwarzkopf styliste ULTIME Biotin+ Volume and Texture H2O Free Hairspray.
The fishtail braid has been having its moment for a while now, but this summer saw the rise of a more modern variation; the pigtail fishtail braid. Although this style took a little more time and practice to master, Collins says the result was ultra-cool and totally worth it. Texture was added to dry hair, using Schwarzkopf styliste ULTIME Biotin+ Volume and Texture Magic Volume Powder, and it was parted down the middle. Then each side was loosely fishtail braided and secured an inch from the bottom with an elastic, loosening some pieces out around the face. Collins then recommended the look be set with a shine spray like Schwarzkopf Crystal Shine and Hold Laminating Shine Spray.
